O Curso de Doutorado tem sua estrutura calcada em disciplinas semestrais de P\u00f3s-Gradua\u00e7\u00e3o, Semin\u00e1rios, Exames de Qualifica\u00e7\u00e3o e Tese de Doutorado. Al\u00e9m das disciplinas cursadas no 1\u00ba ano do curso, o aluno dever\u00e1 no 2\u00ba ano do curso cursar 2 disciplinas de doutorado (com 60 horas de aula cada) e 2 disciplinas de Semin\u00e1rios de Doutorado (com 15 horas de aula cada). Assim, ele totalizar\u00e1 nesse 2\u00ba ano letivo 120 horas de aula em disciplinas e 30 horas em Semin\u00e1rios. Agregando com o total do 1\u00ba ano letivo, chega-se ao total geral de um m\u00ednimo de 450 horas de aula em disciplinas regulares e 50 horas de aula em Semin\u00e1rios. Students with a Master\u2019s degree from another programme may be exempt from certain subjects if equivalence with subjects already taken in their original programmes can be demonstrated.<\/em><\/p>\nContinuation in the doctoral programme also requires good performance in the 1st- and 2nd-year subjects. Students who hold a Master\u2019s degree from another postgraduate programme and have been exempted from certain subjects must still complete at least 104 hours in Master\u2019s-level subjects and pass the Master\u2019s Qualification Exam if required to take it.<\/p>\n
From that point onwards, students move on to the second year, when they must:<\/p>\n
\n- take two advanced doctoral courses, each with four hours per week (totalling 120 hours);<\/li>\n
- carry out two Doctoral Seminars involving the presentation and discussion of articles (bimonthly), each with one hour per week (totalling 30 hours);<\/li>\n
- prepare reports on lectures given within the Programme (Master\u2019s Seminars).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
During the second year (and after completing the courses), students take the Preliminary Qualification Examination. This exam is oral and covers the content of two doctoral-level subjects from the programme. Passing this exam is decided by an examining board comprising three academic staff members from the Programme and enables doctoral students to continue in the Programme to carry out original research and write a doctoral thesis.<\/p>\n
By the end of the third year, students are required to take the Doctoral Qualification Examination. They must prepare a presentation of a research project detailing their thesis proposal, which must be defended before an examining board made up of three academic staff members, at least one of whom must be external to the Programme, and the internal members cannot include the supervisor(s). From the point of passing this Examination, the student will focus on research activities but is still encouraged to continue participating in the Programme\u2019s Seminars.<\/p>\n
